Memory tricks
- "My family" vs polite / addressing others: for YOUR OWN family (humble) use 父 chichi, 母 haha, 兄 ani, 姉 ane. To be polite — someone else's family, or addressing them directly — add お…さん: お父さん, お母さん, お兄さん, お姉さん. Rule of thumb: お…さん = polite.
- A long vowel means one generation older: おじさん (uncle) → おじいさん (grandpa); おばさん (aunt) → おばあさん (grandma). Stretch the sound by one beat and you go up a generation.
- Learn in opposite pairs: older ↔ younger 兄/姉 (brother/sister) ↔ 弟/妹; grandpa ↔ grandma 祖父/祖母. Pairs stick twice as fast.
- Spot the shared kanji: 父 (father) appears in お父さん and 祖父 (grandfather); 母 (mother) in お母さん and 祖母. Learn the base kanji once, reuse everywhere.
- Review with spaced repetition: you forget ~70% within a day. Drop this set into Memoro, 3 minutes a day, and it sticks within a week.
