Active Recall and Spaced Repetition: The Science Behind Flashcards
Flashcards work because they combine two of the most robust findings in learning science: active recall and spaced repetition. Understand these two ideas and you'll get more from twenty minutes of study than most people get from two hours.
Active recall: retrieving beats re-reading
Active recall means pulling an answer out of your memory instead of recognising it on a page. Re-reading a textbook feels productive because the words look familiar — but familiarity is not memory. When you close the book and force yourself to answer "what was the definition?", you're doing the one thing that actually strengthens the memory trace.
Dozens of studies show the same pattern: students who quiz themselves outperform students who re-read, even when the re-readers spend more time. A flashcard is simply the most convenient active-recall device ever made — the prompt gives you nothing to recognise, so you must retrieve.
The forgetting curve: why timing matters
In 1885, Hermann Ebbinghaus measured how fast we forget. Memory decays roughly exponentially:

Forgetting isn't a flaw — it's your brain discarding information it judges unimportant. The trick is to signal importance by reviewing at the right moment.
Spaced repetition: review just before you forget
Every time you successfully recall something just before you'd have forgotten it, the forgetting curve flattens — you'll retain it longer next time. So the ideal review schedule stretches out:
- Learn a card → review after a few minutes.
- Correct → review again in 1 day.
- Still correct → 3 days → 1 week → 3 weeks → 2 months…
- Wrong at any point → back to the start.
This is spaced repetition. A fact you'd need to cram 30 times enters long-term memory after just 6–8 well-timed reviews.
The SM-2 algorithm: a scheduler for your memory
Tracking "which of 400 cards is due today" by hand is impossible. The SM-2 algorithm (SuperMemo, 1987 — the basis of Anki and Memoro) automates it:
- Each card carries an ease factor tuned by your own answer history.
- After each review you rate it — Again, Hard, Good, Easy — and the algorithm sets the next due date.
- Cards you find hard resurface sooner; easy ones stretch out to months.
